Having run a business in the North West for many years, I’ve witnessed towns and cities evolve in surprising ways. Wigan is one such town quietly stepping into the regional spotlight. So, is Wigan truly emerging as a North West powerhouse? From my perspective, the answer is a cautiously optimistic yes.
When we talk about a “powerhouse” in this region, it’s not just about size or population. It’s about economic drive, innovation, infrastructure, and strong local communities collaborating. Wigan may not yet rival Manchester or Liverpool for national headlines, but it’s laying down a foundation that demands attention.
A Flourishing Business Landscape in Wigan
Wigan’s history is rooted in industries like coal mining, textiles, and manufacturing—sectors that have since evolved or disappeared. Today, the town is reinventing itself. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are emerging, particularly in technology, professional services, and the creative industries.
From conversations with local entrepreneurs, there’s a palpable sense of opportunity. One key advantage is affordable workspace. Unlike Manchester’s soaring rents, Wigan offers more accessible costs, enabling businesses to invest in growth rather than overheads. This affordability is vital for start-ups and scale-ups looking to thrive.
Supporting this momentum, local councils and economic development teams are actively fostering business networks, providing grants, and improving support services. While there is room for improvement, these initiatives signal a clear shift towards a more dynamic and supportive business environment in Wigan.
